Red Sox-Yanks

My Red Sox need to sweep the series to get back in the hunt for the division and also to stay ahead of the Rangers for the wild card. The Sox can do it, but I am a bit worried that penny is taking the mound tonight. It seems that on his days to pitch he thinks his pitching at a home run derby. Tazawa takes the mound the second game and Beckett has the series finale.
It will be a tough series, but the Red Sox offense has been clicking latley especially during the last series against the Blue Jays, so thats a good sign. The Yankees have been on fire since the all star break but I see the Sox cooling them down in Boston.
Lets go RED SOX.

Plaxico Burress

I agree with the right to bear arms and protecting yourself, family,and home.
There have been cases were athletes have been attacked while out at night and murdered in their homes but outside of their homes it seems more athletes have gotten in trouble for having a gun, or I should say an unregistered gun. Correct me if I am wrong but I can not think of a time where an athlete actually used his gun in self defense while out and about or partying at nightclubs.

Re: PLaxico Burress

I hafta disagree. In the past two to three years, NFL stars have been robbed and murdered either in nightlife or in the safety of their own homes. True, it was against the law for Burress to be carrying the handgun. It was only illegal, because he did not have it registered. In this country, one of those amendments says the right to bear arms. Burress has every right to carry a firearm as long as he carries it legally. Two years is a pretty steep verdict for a victimless crime, but the correct sentence nonetheless.

RE: Fantasy Draft, you have to feel bad for JW, Ha

Dude falls asleep and not even Santa would leave him a gift. Although Jesus felt bad and gave him Drew Brees. Brandon Marshall, decent, will put up numbers, even if he doesn't want to play for the Broncos, was put on the scout team and claims he doesn't know the playbook. Ryan grant should have a good season. As for the rest of the team, well, my prayers go out to you juice.
But........There might be hope........
You know there is always that one guy in your fantasy league who makes some ridiculous trade for garbage players because he thinks he knows something other do not. So find that guy, send him a package deal, crack open a beer and laugh, and then be a contender in your league.

Plaxico Burress, Locked up

Lets be honest, Burress was an idiot for caring his gun. What are the odds he is actually gonna use it, slim to none. In my opinion, just completely unnecessary. What is with athletes having millions and millions of dollars, being able to play a kids game for a living, basically having every luxury imaginable and finding some way to screw it up.
Bottom line he broke the law, but 2 years, wow. How dumb do you have to feel, you have no intent to hurt anybody, you end up shooting yourself, and then have to go to prison for 2 years. He does need to be punished for his actions but I think 2 years is rather excessive.

Final Four Problems

Memphis is being forced to vacate its 2008 Final Four appearance that featured freshman sensation and future No. 1 pick Derrick Rose and Jon Calipari. Somehow I’m not surprised, rumors surfaced months ago about Rose’s eligibility and where there’s smoke there’s typically fire. Memphis now has to face the indignity of having its lone Final Four appearance for an awful long time stripped from its grasp. A Final Four appearance that ultimately could have been a Memphis National Championship has become a black eye on college basketball. Imagine stripping National Championship rings, banners, shirts, and honor from this university. Imagine Memphis basketball fans ashamed of the “accomplishments” of their team, because they had one (albeit the best player in the country that year) ineligible.

Four things upset me about this.

1) Derrick Rose should have never stepped on that campus for an official visit, unofficial visit, recruiting trip, and for damn sure not to play basketball. Derrick Rose knew after his junior year of high school he was going to play one year at some college and be in the NBA the next season. It’s a shame he was forced to pretend to be a student-athlete at Memphis, when his sole focus was going to the NBA.

2) Kentucky basketball. Coach Calipari is now at the University of Kentucky. It is only a matter of time before he has the program up and ready to contend for a National Championship. Likewise, it is only a matter of time before he has that program up and ready to snatch more banners and vacate more wins. Calipari has been at two universities with two Final Four appearances and he has two vacated Final Fours. Kentucky fans may be excited about this March and the prospects of winning a National Championship. I will be disappointed when a year from this March when it comes out that they have to vacate all the wins and potential accolades from their season.

3) The look on College basketball. College sports in general actually. We want to believe these are college students playing the sport they love. We want to believe that these players are doing things the right way. What would should see is that these amateurs are taken advantage of from the precise moment it appears that any of them can become professionals. They are used and led to mistakes that benefit their handlers more than themselves.

4) The worst part about all of it is that it doesn’t matter. It’s all about money and entertainment in the long run. Derrick Rose and Jon Calipari brought more fame and money to the University of Memphis than any of its students or faculty. You think the president of the university is really upset about this when he/she has a couple extra million in the school’s account? Highly doubt it.

My solution: Let high school players enter the NBDL Draft and play one or more seasons in the developmental league. This will eliminate those players that truly want to go to school and be a student athlete from those that do not.

Fantasy Football Draft

I think I'm getting old OR I enjoy my sleep.



Either way I missed my fantasy draft last night and got stuck with the pre-draft ranked players for my squad. I wanted Drew Brees and got him and from then on that's about my only bright spot. We snagged Brandon Marshall in the third round and he could be a steal in that round. I even saw him come in a little early today and get a brief video session, Cutler would be proud. I got another surprise with UH alumnus Donnie Avery available in the fifth round right after DeSean Jackson. Simply put, the Rams are horrible but they still have Holt, Bulger (when healthy), Stephen Jackson, and Avery. My most important player on my team would have to be Ryan Grant, because without a stellar year from him my team is doomed.

We're excited about the upcoming year and what it will mean for our fans. We got all the players we wanted in the draft and couldn't be happier with all of our selections. We will get them signed and into training camp on time. We know training camp is very important for our rookies (like Chris Wells) and we have to get them in on time. We're gonna be a scrappy team with a lot of heart, dedication, and commitment. This franchise are very dedicated to winning.

mike vick... WE are just as guilty as he is

Mike Vick was found guilty of one of the most heinous crimes ever as he dismembered and slaughtered man's best friend. Admitted, he did not kill any human beings, but he did end the lives of Fido and Lassie still (ok he killed pits not retrievers or whatever those dogs were). Honestly though, who are we to judge Mr. Vick? The general public is just as guilty as Vick when we say this guy deserves a second chance. Get the fuck out of here! Nobody deserves anything in this world and to say the opposite is complete and utter bullshit. Think about all the analysts, coaches, and players alike who all say Vick deserves a second chance. Did any of them deserve a shot at playing/coaching/analyzing in the NFL? NO! They all did it with hard work, much like how Vick earned his right by performing in college and in the pros. Did he deserve anything? NO! On one side note before I break this down thoroughly, I find it odd that mostly the black coaches, players, and analysts alike think this is such a great concept for this man to get a shot at playing again whereas mostly the same positioned white people are somewhat skeptical. Needless to say I am no racist. it is just an interesting tidbit that is nearly impossible to not notice.

So how is the entire public guilty you ask? We are all falling for the trap that Vick is setting by having us give him our pty, our sympathy, and our passing of judgment due to the fact we think he is contrite in his apology. GET SERIOUS PEOPLE! The only reason he seems saddened by the discovery of a dark secret in Vick's private life is the fact that he lost everything both financially and personally as his fan base and bank account both diminished greatly. What did the contrite Vick do before going to prison? Did he not go out and buy a new car just to take the ride to prison? Yes I believe so. Contrite that you fools who buy into this act.

The difference between Donte Stallworth and Mike Vick's cases other than the obvious one involving humans and the other involving animals is simple - Stallworth is truly contrite and somewhat noble in his downfall. Vick is just parading through the motions of an apologetic and sincere man because he lost his position at the zenith of an amazing and stellar career. Stallworth struck a human inadvertently although he was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. When Stallworth immediately came to the harsh realization of what just happened, he immediately called emergency services and submitted willingly to all tests given by the authorities. When Vick was first discovered as news stations reported the rumor of a digfighting ring that Vick participated in, let alone funded, Vick went on the record by saying he was in no way involved and it was just come of his cousins that were involved. Ummmm yeah. Contrite that. Then maybe a week or so later when it was discovered the grisly and brutal details of the dogfighting ring Vick came on and admitted he was involved in everything that was revealed. So if the man was capable of lying when he was on top of the world with everything to lose, what makes you people think he would not lie when he is now at the bottom with nothing to lose? Let me tell you as all realists know, when the chips are down a man will do whatever a man has to do.

Now by no means am I saying Vick should not get a chance to play football again, I am simply saying he does not deserve it. I could care less what a team executive does. The NFL is obviously a place where morals go out the window, so more power to Mr. Vick if he can get paid again for his football services. Just be aware that if Vick does anything to the tune of dogfighting again or gets in any sort of trouble, the entire world would be shocked, but not me. The man does not deserve anything. He has NOT paid his dues just because he went to prison and lost all his money. The fact still remains he tried to cover it all up in the beginning with his lies. His apology is fraud and so are all you people who agree with Vick. But like I said, don't get me wrong about all this. I just don't want you to get Vick wrong about all this and assume he means well because he made a public apology. Think about it folks. Let's hope for the best on the field with Vick, but let's also try to hope for the absolute best off it as well.

Vick Deserves a Second Chance

I do not think what Vick did was right but come on, the guy deserves a second chance. He has paid his debt to society and paid a high price for his actions. I applaud the Eagles organization for giving Vick the opportunity at a second chance along with Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb for coming out and publicly backing Vick.

As said before, the Eagles are a great fit for Vick. An established and stable organization with good ownership and coaching. An organization that will help Vick stay on the right path.

It's time for people to stop bashing Vick and move one, he made a bad decision and has dealt with the consequences. Now let the man move on, get his life together and live his life.

Donte Stallworth get drunks and high, then goes and kills a man, yet he has not recieved half of the public outcry and bashing that Vick has dealt with. Lets not even get started on his jail time compared to Vick. To me there is something wrong with that picture.

Bottom line, I think its great that Vick is getting another shot in the NFL and props to the Eagles for giving Vick a second chance.

U.S soccer, I am still not convinced, for Obvious Reasons

But on a serious note..While Mr. JW 4th does bring up good points of some players now playing overseas, I am still not convinced U.S. soccer is on the rise. I say this because the way they are playing now and the teams they are beating is something they have been doing for years and years. They have one huge victory and then make their lving off of the Honduras' and Costa Rica's of the world.

I will admit Tim Howard is a great player- goalie, and has performed at a high level on the National Team and on his clubs teams. Oguchi Onyewu going to AC MILAN is great but its not good enough just making the team although in his case it is yet to be seen what he can do, so I will reserve comment until I see his play at AC MILAN.

None of the players mentioned that play overseas have made a name for themselves overseas or gotten that national recongnition and judging from their play have not really benfited from playing overseas, except for Tim Howard, who again is an outstanding player.

As for some of the players mentioned playing overseas, Freddy Adu, yes hes young but does not start for the U.S, Demarcus Beasley does not start for the U.S, Clint Dempsey has some good moments every now and then but for the most part when it comes to big games he dissappears. The best player for the U.S Landon Donovan plays in the MLS, so how much better can U.S fans really expect him to get.

So again im not convinced the team is on the rise, while I do come down harsh on the U.S Soccer team, would I like to see them be able to compete on the world stage, of course. I just do not see it happening.

Re : USA Soccer Sucks

I'm aware that USA soccer isn't ish compared to the Brazils, Frances, Spains, Englands, and Italies of the world. But, it's kinda harsh to come down on american soccer enthusiasts who see their team and their sport slightly on the rise in this country. More and more USA talent is playing overseas, including Oguchi Onyewu, who is playing for AC Milan this year. Tim Howard (pictured) played in the EPL with Manchester United and continues to play in that league with Everton. There are other prominent USA players that are playing abroad including: Clint Dempsey (MF)Fulham; Carlos Bocanegra (D) Fulham; Brian McBride (F) Fulham; Michael Bradley (MF)Heerenveen; Freddy Adu (MF-F)Benfica; and DaMarcus Beasley (MF-F) Rangers. This proves that US soccer is improving, because the premier soccer leagues are not in the United States.

As I stated earlier and Los agreed, the major thing holding US soccer back is the country's athletes. All of them are interested in other sports. If our best athletes continue to choose other sports of interest, US soccer will continue to suffer.

U.S.A Soccer Sucks

Wow, where to begin.

I agree, one of the reasons soccer is not liked and is not successful in the states is because here kids do not want to grow up and be soccer players. Kids want to play basketball, football, baseball and be the next big thing in those sports. Unlike in other countries where kids want to be the next Messi, Ronaldo, and Torres. Most people here in the states do not appreciate the game of soccer, the strategy and skill that goes into it. It also doesnt help when the National team is terrible, I love soccer but I would rather watch figure skating than watch the U.S. team play. Even when it comes to the MLS, the talent there is a major step down from leagues across the world.

But.... For the few U.S.A soccer fans that are out there, I hope after seeing the team versus Mexico, all of you will come back down to earth and realize the U.S is light years away from being able to really compete on the world stage. In typical U.S soccer fashion they get there one big win (Spain in the federations cup), that they always get every couple years and have fans get excited and say, here comes U.S soccer they are finally going to challenge the top teams in the world. May I remind you in the same federatons cup the U.S was destroyed by the likes of Italy and Brazil then by some miracle beat Spain, or shall I say spain beat themsleves by thinking they could just show up, not even lace up their cleats and win. Al though I will give the U.S defense credit, they played well that game. U.S soccer feeds off beating teams like Honduras and Costa Rica, and till this day have trouble with Mexico, who is not even the Mexico of old.

So U.S soccer fans, prepare yourself for a continued let down from your team,which you could avoid if you just saw U.S soccer for what it really is, which is not very good. They will quailfy for the world cup but again do nothing there.

The United States soccer team lost to Mexico in Mexico City once again yesterday. The world embraces soccer and revels in their respective team’s wins and losses. In this country, however, we don’t “get” soccer. These are some of the quotes I heard yesterday about soccer.

“There’s no goals”

“It’s boring”

“There’s no excitement”

First, I do not buy into any of that. Soccer is a very exciting sport. There doesn’t have to be goals or scoring to watch Christiano Ronaldo totally embarrass a defender or watch the speed of Lionel Messi. Second, I wonder if we are all band wagon fans. Soccer is the one international sport where Americans have the least amount of success. Needless to say, we show the least amount of interest in it as well. Third, I wondered aloud about this during the last World Cup. If tiny Portugal can produce the best player in the world, why can’t the United States? It dawned on me. Our best athletes are not playing soccer. In countries around the world the majority of their best athletes play soccer; ours do not. In America, major athletes play football, basketball, and baseball. Imagine if Mr. Kobe Bryant played soccer in America and overseas. He would be among the best players in the world in my opinion. Bryant has a drive and the will to be the best; that every major sports star have in common.

My thoughts on overseas (continued)

Jeremy Tyler has indeed inked a 6 figure deal overseas in Israel.
I have to agree with his decision and if I'm another high school stand out I go overseas in a heartbeat. The sports business is not guaranteed and if there is a 6 figure salary out there go for it. I read the comment on the last post I made, it may be fun to chill with Coach K and Roy Williams. It seems like more fun to have $150,000 in the bank account and play basketball for a living. Not to mention that the NBA isn't going anywhere for him. He can play his two years in Israel and BOUNCE to the league. And in two years, if he SUCKS he can just hoop over there with the money he's already earned. If he has two so-so years in high school and college, NBA teams are going to sour on any prospect FAST. Might as well have some G's in the bank, while you get scouted. Besides, he doesn't have to be bothered with the rigors of pretending like a college freshman student at Louisville for a year. He can just focus on hoops like he wants to do and get gwap. Does he anybody believe for a second that Jon Wall (See video post below) is going to take more than 12 hrs his first semester, so he can be eligible to hoop in the spring and then bounce seconds after March dropping all of his spring classes?

Dicky V has come out with his pre-season rankings. He has the Kentucky Wildcats ranked #2. Given it is just a pre-season ranking and Kentucky does have have a pair of diaper dandies, John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins. Is this all hype ? Or could this really be a top 3 team and based on their ranking, a national title contender ?

My thoughts on highschoolers going overseas

I get it. I completely understand. Honestly.

Sports are entertainment. When you are no longer able to entertain, your career is over. In sports, namely basektball, your career last from age 18-35. In the United States, from years 18-21, the NCAA wants you to entertain for free while the NCAA, universities, and coaches rack up millions of dollars. This system is unfair. If I was 17-18, in highschool, ranked in the top ten in the country, and I could get money overseas, I'm gone.



Last year, Brandon Jennings made over a million dollars playing in Italy. Jennings was a guy that was supposed to be the next great point guard from the University of Arizona and what would he have gotten for that? NOT A DIME. Did going overseas hurt his draft stock? No, he went 10th. Did he learn more by playing with professionals for a full season, instead of college amateurs? Yes, he was playing against grown men who were paid to play basketball and feed their families; not against amateurs who were too concerned about getting back to their dorm rooms to play XBOX Live. Did he capitilize on his ability to play basketball to provide for his family? Absolutely.

As college basketball fans, we offend criticize players for leaving school too early to play in the NBA or overseas. If I'm an engineering major with two years left to graduate and a company offers me the same amount of money if I had my degree, I'm gone. What's the point of staying in school when the money is already on the table?

Truely the Dog Days of Summer

Is there anything more boring sports-wise than the summer?

I mean honestly.

The only major sports in action are Golf, NASCAR, and baseball. Golf and NASCAR are the opposite of exciting in my eyes. I can't even stand to watch an entire baseball game without going to the game and drinking a 12 pack of beer. And seeing how much one beer costs ($8 are you kidding!?!??) I highly doubt I'll ever attend a baseball game that lives up to my lofty expectations.

My highlights of summer sports are: NBA Draft, NBA Free Agency, NFL Training Camps, NFL Holdouts, College Football Talk, and Rumors. No wonder ESPN will cover Brett Favre's every waking move during the summer. Deep down inside of ESPN's heart, theyre bored as hell as well.

Vick Team

The Carolina Panthers would make a lot of sense for Mr. Vick. Actually, tons of teams could make sense for him. Panthers, Ravens, and Steelers in my opinion could make room for Vick.

However, I just can't see a NFL team signing him. He hasn't played for two years and is still suspended by the commissioner. Not to mention the media circus that will follow Michael Vick's every move. For any team serious about winning for the upcoming year, they don't want a mob (see below) like that following their every move. They don't want reporters asking his new team mates the same Mike Vick questions every day. In my opinion, he's a huge distraction and we still don't know IF he can play or WHEN he can play.

Best team for Vick ?

Mike Vick will be in the NFL at some point. What would be the best fit for him ? Carolina Panthers ? The weapons are there, Steve Smith, James Stewart, DeAngelo Williams, and then add Vick (As quarterback). That would be a very scary offense in my opinion. Defensive Coordinators would have nightmares trying to gameplan.
Any thoughts ?

Red Sox Trade Deadline Winners? Not really

Although Victor Martinez gives the Red Sox another bat and eventually a replacement for the fading and PED-positive David Ortiz, this does not give them the "DUB" for the trade deadline. That would go to the team that got this man below.



The Philadelphia Phillies scooped Cliff Lee without giving up any of their major prospects. This trade improves the Phillies today and next year when those prospects are ready to contribute on the big league squad. One thing remains constant in baseball and that is that pitching rules. The Phillies added an AL Cy Young winner without giving up any major prospects. That sounds like a "DUB" at the trade deadline.

World Series

With the addition of Victor Martinez and the Red Sox pitching, the Red Sox will be World Series champs this year.

I would also like to add some friendly words to Yankee fans.

When it comes to the winners and losers of the trade deadline, the Red Sox are clear winners with the acquisition of Victor Martinez. This move gave the Red Sox the much needed bat they were looking for. Martinez has had solid outings in his first couple games with the team, including his 5 for 6 outing yesterday against the Orioles. The Red Sox have a huge week ahead of them with series against the Rays and Yankees. I look for the Red Sox to come out a top the AL East after theses two series.
